Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ April 2017

Dear Collective,

Another month brings another Tarot Reading for the Collective, and for April we are revisiting the power of the Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince. I personally love a bit of crone wisdom, so I am always happy to whip out (and be whipped by) this deck. For those of you who have previously gazed upon these cards with reverent wonder, you will be pleased to know that it is being rereleased! Go here to preorder your own copy.

The questions that are being asked for the Collective this month are,

What helps us play?

What helps us cry?

What helps us be authentic?

What helps us maintain our integrity?

Let us begin!

1. What helps us play?

Six of Swords

Six of Swords - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I will help you play by assisting you to bring all parts of yourself to as many parts of your life as possible.  I will help you feel contained and connected enough to not distance yourself from any aspect of your true nature in order to be take seriously. I will help you to be adventurous enough to feel complete in the choices you make, and how you gather your life stories, so you can present them with knowingness and humour along with the pain. I remind you that play is sacred, is to be shared where possible, and is accessible in all states of being.

2. What helps us cry?

Tower

Tower - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Tower. Here you are again. You have been such a regular to these Tarot Readings for the Collective for over a year. How on Earth do you bypass the laws of probability again and again with such finesse?

Well clearly you aren’t crying enough. I will help you cry more. I will be that itch that scratches inside and pushes you beyond the conditionings that taught you that crying is a sign of weakness, and that suppressing your tears is a sign of ‘being brave’. I will obliterate the notion that you are supposed to ‘hold it all together’ all of the time.

Cry because you feel helpless, cry because you care about someone going through a hard time, cry because you feel alone, cry because bombs are considered a viable and acceptable way of making a point, cry because the world is not perfect and never will be, cry because your belief systems can never fully support you without you ignoring some inconvenient detail, cry because you need to let it out rather than hold it all in. Cry because sometimes it is the perfect response to the bewilderment of life, and those who try to block this beautiful expression are surely dying inside. Cry for their ignorance, cry for their disassociated pain. Cry that there is such a long way to go, cry because it is good to clean out your eyes.

3. What helps us be authentic?

Seven of Wands

Seven of Wands - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I will help you be authentic by reminding you to step up, stand up, not hold back, and believe in a better way of doing things. I will help you live that better way of doing things before it becomes matter-of-fact, or legal. I will help you burn all the bullshit by remaining steadfast in the face of blind ignorance. I will keep you on track with authenticity by showing you what can be done when you refuse to placate those who might try to manipulate you, whether they are conscious of their actions or not.

Authenticity with me means stepping outside your comfort zone, but finding a zone of your own choosing rather than fitting in with what is conventional. Find your own way, find your own voice.

What helps us maintain our integrity?

4. Three of Disks

Three of Disks - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I keep you with your integrity by providing you with friends who have your back. If you can’t find those people, then you will be your own support. I remind you to have a good look at the power of your future path at all times, and to resist the shortcuts that take you dangerously close to losing what you fought so hard to maintain. I make you impervious to lies and deceptions, and associations with those who stopped listening to their true heart a long time ago.

I protect you from others so deep in delusion that they think that the disheartened violent way is the only way. Gather close to you those who take growing up and taking responsibility seriously. Reject the idea that you can do something dishonest in order to get a small reprieve.

Challenge yourself to grow towards a clearer future, while fully embracing the knowledge of how murky it all is right now. There is so much that we can lose as humans, but our integrity should never be lost. It is more vital than I can say.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ May 2017

 Dear Collective,

Welcome to another month, and another Tarot Reading for the Collective. This month I am using the Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert. Joanna is an artist and teacher who I met at Readers Studio (an international tarot readers conference in NYC) in 2015 & 2016. I have her Gaian Tarot deck as well, and eagerly look to see what she creates, which I can regularly catch up with on her Instagram.

Perhaps Pentimento Tarot is an anniversary deck for me, as I used it for the Tarot Reading for the Collective in May of last year, and in the same month it was also used in my wedding ceremony in the Redwoods of Oakland, California!

This month also marks 14 years since I went full-time as a professional tarot reader. I didn’t start tarot reading professionally with the idea that it would become such an important part of my life, but 14 years later I am still so very grateful to have this as the work that allows me to exist in the world in a way that fits with my heart and my ethics.

This month’s questions for the tarot cards are:

What must we strive to remember?

What can we afford to forget?

What should we revere?

What will help us share what we are discovering in our hearts?

Let us begin!

1. What must we strive to remember?

The Lovers

The Lovers - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

Strive to remember that there are those who do seek alignment, practice compassion and love fearlessly, despite what the news may tell you. Remember that love is expansive and full, and anyone who tries to limit it conditionally is thwarting their own capacity for receiving glorious attentive love (whether platonic or otherwise).

Remember that I am right here beside you, at all times, sharing the merits of loving kindness, even when you are too deep in the abyss to notice. I don’t need you to acknowledge me, I am just happy for those brief moments of respite when you look into my eyes and can see that your heart has company.

Remember that the road is long, that there is always more to explore, and that one day that road will end. So don’t ignore those who are gathered around you, hearts wide open, with the deluded belief that there will always be more time. Connect now with the ones your heart sings to. Why wait for eulogies to express your gratitude and respect?

2. What can we afford to forget?

Hanged Man

The Hanged Man - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

Forget the perspectives that never renew themselves, that keep you stuck and irate. Forget the ones who confined you to a particular role and never thought to check back in on you to see if you had grown.

Forget the fear that keeps you from being comfortable with the mystery, and forget the stories that – intentionally or unintentionally – have had lies woven into them over time.

Forget the conditionings that keep you believing the arrogant statement, “that’s just the ways things are”.

Forget that you belong to anyone and they to you. You are your own beings and can choose to walk consciously and considerately with each other without any notion of ownership.

3. What should we revere?

Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

Revere the names that are no longer spoken, revere the contributions that were never recorded. Revere the spaces between words and the choice for deep silence. But revere also the noise that is required to combat the injustices that are taking place.

Revere the wheel that keeps on spinning whether you are alive or dead. Revere the invisible knowledge that whispers, “One day you will be forgotten.” Perhaps not for many years after you spin out of your flesh, but forgotten you will be.

Revere the relief that comes from open conversations with honest people, those who are with you for the sheer love of it. Revere your capacity to rise from the pit, and the autonomous power you can manifest.

4. What will help us share what we are discovering in our hearts?

Death

Death - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

Nothing like a death to get people gushing about their love for the deceased, and trying to mend connections with those still here. Don’t wait for a death to bring my wisdom forth, dear friends.

I will help you share what you are discovering in your hearts by taking you back to the moment just before the lies started to set in. Just before the beliefs about yourself and others became gospel, and just before you decided to ignore your intuition for the first time. By identifying those preliminary moments, you can let me bury those old states once and for all. No doubt there are grave-diggers amongst you, and poetically sentimental types too, but bury I will. And as the lies and worn-out belief systems and ignored intuitions disintegrate like compost in the earth, I help you share a love that is so old your mouth can barely shape the words.

Let me remind you of the impermanence of all things, and that by truly appreciating your time together you can unlock deep places in the heart that have no need to be ignored. Why suppress that which can be freely given and can bring such clear connection? Don’t be cagey with your love, your heart has no time for it.

More about Death:

At Readers Studio in 2016, once I had bought the Pentimento Tarot from Joanna, I was looking at the original artworks on her table, trying to figure out which one I wanted. The Emperor was there, which is my birth card, though my eyes kept straying towards the Death card. I was drawn to it, but I was wondering about the implications of choosing the Death card and the energetic repercussions of that choice. So I continued to mull it over while getting on with the rest of the conference. During a rest period I firmed my resolve and decided that the Death card would be mine!

I walked confidently towards Joanna’s merchant table and announced over the noise of the room, “I want to buy Death!”

“What?”

“I want to buy Death.”

“But… you got your deck already…?” [there was a heady mix of a noisy room and an Australian accent going on here!]

“No, [pointing to the Death artwork], I want to buy Death!”

“Ohh!!” [laughs]

Three times I had to say it! There must be magic in that.

Later, when we hugged goodbye, she said into my ear, “I am so glad you got Death”.

Death card original by Joanna Powell Colbert

And here it is, ‘Death’ – in its place on my mantlepiece, as a daily reminder for release and renewal.

Tarot/Oracle Card Reading for the Collective ~ June 2017

Dear Collective,

We are doing something a bit different for this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective, as it was my birthday recently and I was given a most excellent deck of Oracle Cards by my friends Xavier and Wasim. It is so good I want to share it with you all. Xavier said he discovered it by googling ‘Poo’ and ‘Tarot’. Perfect! When I wrote to the creator of the deck to ask permission to use his cards for my Collective reading and told him this, he wrote back: I’m glad that I’m in the top search for “poo and tarot”, what an honour!

What kind of oracle deck is this, you may be wondering? It’s the Brown Magick Oracle Deck by Richie Brown! And it has many messages for us, so let us continue.

What questions does one ask an oracle that has the poo emoji on the back of all its cards?

Brown Magick Oracle Cards by Richie Brown.jpg

I wasn’t sure at first, but when you are a tarot reader you simply must become accustomed to starting a reading without knowing what on earth is going to happen when you open your mouth (or start typing). It’s the only way to do it really if you want readings that aren’t merely formulaic.

So here is what I came up with:

When something smells bad, what should we do?

What is awesome?

What sucks royally?

Who are we anyway?

So let us begin this inaugural Oracle Reading for the Collective!

1. When something smells bad, what should we do?

Fan

Fan - Brown Magick Oracle Cards by Richie Brown.jpg

On a literal note, whip me out and shake me hard! Or sprinkle me with essential oils and gently wave me around the room.

On a less practical but more enigmatic note, strike a fabulous stance, hold me ostentatiously and look everyone in the eye, thus distracting them from the smell with your glittering presence.

On a more practical and perhaps most effective note, go to where the smell is, particularly if it is a metaphorical smell, and point your metaphorical fan at the transgressor and fan their smelly words back at them. Make them feel sorry they ever unleashed such diabolical verbal diarrhoea on the unsuspecting public! Demand they atone for their stinky sins! Command them to sit in their smell, stay in their smell and inhale their smell until they jolly well come to their senses and understand that they can’t just fling their pong around in a manipulative way without expecting an uproar. May they come to know the full force of FAN! May they shake in their boots at the reflection of their own hypocrisy!

2. What is awesome?

Sad Pizza

Sad Pizza - Brown Magick Oracle Cards by Richie Brown.jpg

I am awesome? Well, I think I was once awesome, before I got sad. Am I really still considered awesome?

Yes, Sad Pizza, it seems that you are.

Ok. Well I suppose you want me to talk some more? I guess I can still be awesome despite my sadness, because even though I have been torn asunder from the warm whole circle I was once aligned with, I am still cheesy and some people like that.

Even though I’m a bit droopy at times, people still want me to hang out with me. Maybe my awesomeness, in part, isn’t despite my sadness, but because of it. So maybe when we get all droopy and sad-face with each other, we are being more real. We aren’t pretending that everything is super fantastic, we are just going, “I had a hard day today.  I am feeling mopey and weird. Want to share some pizza?” I hope we can all be awesome like that, together.

3. What sucks royally?

Unicorn

Unicorn - Brown Magick Oracle Cards by Richie Brown.jpg

What?! Really? I suck royally?

The oracle says yes.

Fine. Whatever. Ergh. I guess it has something to do with how people think of me as an elusive perfect fantasy, and get obsessed with that instead of just getting on with the task at hand.

I suppose I inspire people to hope for things that are unattainable, and that may even be downright bad for them. I can be like the seemingly perfect lover who is actually a rather superficial rotter, but you’re too busy projecting your ideal-partner-fantasy onto them to see them for who they really are: pooey and superficial.

Pah! I want to be just glittery and amazing again! Why can’t people rub themselves in glitter (preferably that very expensive biodegradable kind) and sing songs about rainbows like they used to? I don’t want to suck! Rah! Enough with your moronic fantasies! See me for who I am! A make-believe horsey with a horn of power!

4. Who are we anyway?

Female

Female - Brown Magick Oracle Cards by Richie Brown.jpg

It is true you know. When we were in utero we all began as female. Some of you then mutated into other genders, but the female is the original matrix.

So what are we going to do with this knowledge? Get all caught up in imposing binary gender roles based upon bits of flesh? We are animated skeletons wrapped in meat. Why does the Collective insist on assigning roles and responsibilities based upon what shape your skeleton is, and how your meat hangs upon it?

If the Collective is Female, I pronounce a celebration of skeletons, chromosomes and hormones. We can all sit together and discuss the various ways in which our hormones flow and the changes we feel at different times. For the record, testosterone is a hormone, and one that urgently needs to be brought into balance. Everyone is familiar with the notion of the hysterical woman, but we are rarely asked to consider the catastrophic effects of unhinged testosterone: war, violence, mansplaining….!

Ideally we could stop viewing the genders as binary, static things, and get on with exploring the glorious expansive amazingness of all the ways in which we can exist, beyond the confines of societal conditioning.

Radio Readings & Freaky Dancing

$

On the evening of Monday May 28, I did something I had never done before in my tarot career – live tarot readings for the collective on the radio! A reading for the collective means a reading for everyone – in this case, anyone who was listening to the show, or might listen to it in the future.

It was the first chilly night of the year and, regretting not wearing enough warm clothes, I turned up to The Bucket List, the cafe which houses Bondi Radio community station.

Kate Bowman and Lorna Black had invited me to do “something psychic” on their show Farmers’ Daughters.  I did two tarot readings – the first one being a general tarot reading for the collective, and the second reading was just me pulling ‘wild cards’, that is, the best cards for the collective to work with right now.

The Bucket List had closed to the public for the evening, so it was just me, Kate and Lorna in a little glass booth getting progressively warmer (thankfully) as we danced around the limited space to the excellent tunes they were playing.

First of all I did a tarot reading for the collective using three randomly pulled cards from the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi:

And here are the four wild cards from four different decks! I deliberately brought my four most trippy tarot decks – in the hope of influencing Kate and Lorna to play some psytrance. It worked, they did!

Psychic Sarah on Farmers Daughters - Bondi Radio III.jpg

Navigators Tarot of the Mystic Sea by Julia Turk; The David Bowie Tarot Deck by Jessica DeFelice; The Tarot by Oliver Hibert; Fractal Tarot by Sara M. Pellerin

Maybe freaky dance music isn’t your thing? But maybe it could be if you listened to this broadcast! You can hear the whole show here – it goes for two hours. Play it while you’re doing some chores if you like, or commuting. I speak a few times in the first hour.

Action shot taken by Kate as I read the cards!

And, for your amusement, here is a video of me doing freaky dancing in a restrictive space. Anything to warm myself up on a cold winters night. Excellent music helps the body move, of course.

So Kate and Lorna want me to come back on the show for more psychic tarot fun! I’m thinking of the different kinds of readings that I could do… perhaps I could do One Card Wonders for people who are listening to the show? We shall see. In the meantime, here is that link again:

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ July 2017

$

Dear Collective,

Over the past few weeks, so many clients (whether they are cat people or not) have been choosing to work with the Tarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall, that I figured perhaps more of you might want an opportunity to gaze upon this splendid deck?

Tarot of the Cat People is a deck that reminds me of the importance of kookiness, great style, and powerful poses! It has personally inspired a number of clothing purchases from vintage clothing stores. As I choose this deck, I wish for you, kooky, stylish, and powerful choices!

The questions for this month’s Collective Reading are:

What is bubbling up within?

How do we learn to take responsibility?

Who is our demanding yet helpful mentor?

Where to from here?

Let’s begin!

1. What is bubbling up within?

Nine of Pentacles

Nine of Pentacles - Tarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall

What is bubbling up within? A strange mixture of comfort and pleasantness along with freaky little bundles of weird stuff.

I think what might be awakening, dear Collective, is a sort of hope – that despite all the horrors that slam into our worldview every day, healthy connections are still possible. By healthy I mean authentic, grounded and real. Where are the healthy connections happening in your world right now? They can be friends and/or family, or just as powerfully, short random happenings with people you may never see again, or who you see in more professional circumstances on a habitual basis.

I can allow opportunities for sudden explosions of abundance leaving you feeling fortunate to have come across a certain person or witnessed a particular event, allowing you to feel like your batteries have been charged up a notch or two (or nine).

2. How do we learn to take responsibility?

Ten of Swords

Ten of Swords - Tarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall

Ha! Finally! My responsible side can be revealed, not just the usual dramatic-woe-is-me aspect. So. How can I help the Collective learn to take responsibility?

For starters, you can take note when the first sword is placed down, then the second, then the third, then the fourth…etcetera, and see if there is some sort of pattern emerging. Do the swords begin to surround you (or even pierce you, as often seen in other Ten of Swords cards) when you are in certain situations? When you are dealing with certain people? When you are wondering why others are being ‘meanies’?  When you are in a challenging situation and you just can’t get past “why does this keep happening to me?”.

The arrival of the Swords signifies your wakeup call! Is there something you need to pay attention to? Change? Stop? Start? Are you feeling unsafe, and if so, are you able to make a decision that allows you to feel safe, or at least somewhat safer? Can you see through the fog and recognise when someone is trying to charm you or manipulate you to suit their whims? If you can’t change the circumstances right now, are you at least able to change your direction, pace, or intention?

Don’t let me stab you. Let me show you how to be more alert to your current situation.

3. Who is our demanding yet helpful mentor?

Ten of Wands

Ten of Wands - Tarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall

I will challenge you to stare into my eyes until you have to blink. And if I need to blink my trusty cat will take over. So you see, you cannot escape me. I am always watching you and reminding you to get on with the actions you want to take. Although, allow me to clarify what I mean by that.

I’m not going to get all motivational and I’m-gonna-kick-your-butt on you. If you need to rest, I accept that you need to rest. If it’s necessary for you to abandon some exciting plan to attend to the washing, the dog poo on your shoe, or the loved one who is sick, then that is where you must be.

I am not here to demand you abandon your responsibilities in favour of finding peace. For where else can peace be found than attending to your responsibilities?  Make sure that the activities you are attending to can in some way assist your future self. Whether that be through study, enriching conversations that come from the heart, saving money as long as it is practical to do so, meditating under the guide of an experienced and wise teacher, volunteering, connecting with community…whatever it is, just make sure you feel it is useful and helping you learn about life in a practical and revelatory way.

Let the lessons come through actual experience rather than solely through talking about it. I will help you move beyond the mere discussions, and into the momentum that allows you to live right where you are, and in that way, step by step, you will move into the wisdom you are meant to accumulate.

4. Where to from here?

King of Swords

King of Swords - Tarot of the Cat People by Karen Kuykendall

Forward, of course. And with a strong and decisive heart, of course. Don’t let the intuition of others overrule your own – especially if they are being rather forceful about it. Trust in your capacity to see things as they are, and if you are struggling with that, then don’t make a decision until you have all the information you need.

If you suspect others are withholding information from you, then politely and pointedly ask for them to share the pieces of the puzzle that you need.  If they continue to be cagey, disengage, for dealing that kind of energy is so tiresome.

If you keep on finding yourself in the company of those who lie without a second thought, then show them a better way by being honest and careful with your words. Prove to them that it is possible to engage with people without throwing around ‘little’ lies in order to protect one’s ego.

From here, I think the Collective would do well to stop speaking to those who rant from a place of being stuck in the past. Dialogue with those who are willing to find new ways of communicating that can move beyond name-calling and into the situations at hand that must be dealt with if we are to grow and start dealing with the results of our past and current actions. Speak well, and speak with stamina. This could take some time.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ August 2017

Dearest Collective,

This month I return to the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi both for its beauty, and for how sleekly the cards slip in my hands as I shuffle them. I wish to get straight to the point with this deck, so here are the questions for August:

What weighs upon our psyche?

What challenges us to grow?

What will push us forward?

Where is our power?

Let us begin!

1. What weighs upon our psyche?

Queen of Wands

Queen of Wands - Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi

What weighs upon the Collective’s psyche? The promise that life was going to be full of sunflowers if you just try and fit in and follow the rules. Then the growing realisation that even those who were playing by the rules were still struggling, and that those who couldn’t fit in were an oddly strange, complex and chaotic mix of glittery shiny beauty, who were on one hand thriving and empowering others, but on the other, being vilified and even killed.

I am weighing upon you now, my Collective, as a weaver of beauty and power, and of mystery and meaning, as well as an elusive force that forever stays out of your reach. When will the Collective’s conditionings erode themselves to a point where people can talk sense instead of cutting my wand with the horror of ignorance? I am but a step away, but I am weary of weaving stories that only the disenfranchised can hear.

2. What challenges us to grow?

Seven of Pentacles

Seven of Pentacles - Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi.jpg

What challenges us to grow? Small steps. Small, solid, careful steps, plodding along, perhaps not seeing the end of the tunnel, but not needing to see it in order to carry on. I come to you to keep you on the path, and to dissolve the urge to look for lazy ways of avoiding accountability. I stand with you to make sure your growth is hard-earned, and that there is no cheating on this exam of life. Of course, there WILL be those who do cheat their way ahead, but their rewards are empty and full of internal strife. There is no longterm escape from lack of personal and community responsibility.  Stick with me to know how far you’ve come. And know that your success lies not in how much you do, but how consistently you connect with your heart as you move forward.

3. What will push us forward?

Nine of Swords

Nine of Swords - Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi.jpg

What will push us forward? The sneaking suspicion that there are those amongst us looking to chain our creative wisdom. But know that what you have is the knowledge of what it is to sit with discomfort. I will push you forward by helping you face the discomforts rather than suppress them. You will no longer be able to tolerate behaviours that slice at your integrity and might. My passage is not easeful, but it awakens wisdom that cannot be chained, that will forever be unwieldy in its capacity to keep rising, keep growing, keep awakening.

4. Where is our power?

Queen of Pentacles

Queen of Pentacles - Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi.jpg

Where is our power? It is in the silent and quiet reach for the rose in the storm, reminding us that there is so much love in this existence – inexplicably – despite all the lies that roll out over the continents from those who have been granted too much false power.

OUR power is in the in-between moments, the pauses and the breaths, the dance-moves and the embraces, the heart-to-heart conversations that take place everywhere across this life-cycle, drawing us all in, and reminding us of who we are and how we can become more ourselves all the time.

More or less effort, it doesn’t matter, as long as our movements are a true representation of how creative our minds can be when we unchain them from the cliches and the tired old tropes that suffocate any free-spirited notion that our lives and thoughts and bodies could actually be our own. Sovereign. Embrace me, as I embrace you.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ September 2017

Dear Collective,

My apologies for this tardy reading! From the end of August until September 10 I was sitting on a cushion with my eyes shut, meditating at the Vipassana meditation centre in Blackheath and thus ignoring you all. Then I got back and it took a wee while to get into the swing of things again. There is quite a pace to full-time tarot reading and all the admin that goes along with it! So here we have, as we cross over into the final part of September, this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective!

I just used the Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince for a marriage equality post on Instagram, and realised it was time to crack this powerful deck out for the Collective again! It is also the birthday month of Ellen, the creator of this deck. Happy Birthday Ellen!

The questions for September are:

What archetype supports us to show respect?

What archetype supports us to uphold dignity for all?

What archetype supports us to grow in wisdom?

What archetype supports us to make life count?

Let’s begin!

[Interestingly, the first three cards in this reading are the exact three cards that came up for the marriage equality post! I swear I shuffled! For a long time!]

1. What archetype supports us to show respect?

Nine of Water ~ Lady of the Lake

Nine of Water (Cups) ~ Lady of the Lake - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Know that the power people try to assert from the upper echelons of this constructed society is a shallow power, a decaying power, a power that is dying and waiting to be buried. Take yourself to the river, to the ocean, to the lake, or to the puddle and notice how it reminds you to take a breath and remember where you stand or sit in this world.

Even the most polluted water offers us more than the polluted ideologies that humans unfortunately tend to grab onto like a dog on a bone. So seek not to offer respect to the societal codes that condemn and vilify. Instead endeavour to show respect to the conversations that flow with quiet humility, to the voices that grow bold with clear insights uncovered through thorough observation, and to the human who stands strong in self-awareness and self-knowledge – despite the lies that trickle past their ears by those afraid of what it means to wake up.

2. What archetype supports us to uphold dignity for all?

Corruption (Tower) ~ Tlazolteotl

Corruption (Tower) ~ Tlazolteotl - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I will come for you in the night time and push your deepest fears out of you. I will cut those fears out of your throat so you do not speak corrupt things that should never have formed past a seed in your brain. I will chew on those fears and vomit them into oblivion. I will be your ominous shadow if you allow yourself to believe those who tell you not to think for yourself. I will take a step back and let you pass as you emerge from the misery that told you some were lesser than you.

I will support you to uphold dignity for all by showing you the alternative in your darkest nightmares – the alternative where it is you who is persecuted by the ignorance of others. Don’t let the dying ways pollute your brain. Let me show you how to cut out the crap so that I don’t have to do it for you.

3. What archetype supports us to grow in wisdom?

Magician ~ Isis

Magician ~ Isis - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Grow in wisdom by letting colour and magic into your life. Follow the steps of the wise ones in your world – the ones who take their path seriously enough to follow it diligently. Integrate the experiences you have actually lived, rather than the words of those who are not you and never were you. Make sure that what you are creating belongs to your heart and let the beauty of that fascinate you as you gracefully gather mysteries that will reveal themselves to those who value intuition as well as practicality.

I will help you grow in this way by alerting you to insights that you have formed in your brains before, but you’ve since forgotten. I will remind you to integrate those insights so that your discoveries are not neglected. It is important to do this not only for yourself, but for the people who observe you, and who seek to be inspired by you.

4. What archetype supports us to make life count?

Siren of Fire ~ Qadesh

Siren of Fire ~ Qadesh - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I will support you to make life count by reminding you those are bodies you are in! You are not here in this form in order to ignore your sensations and live in your heads alone. Get into your bodies, notice what you enjoy about how it feels to be in your body and express that through your movements.

If you can’t enjoy your body right now because of limitations of pain or movement, then enjoy the way your breath stills your brain, even if only for one breath.

Make life count by holding yourself dear and knowing your body is sovereign. Seek consent at all times and respect the boundaries that others place around themselves. They are not trying to harm you, they are just seeking to move freely, without agitation.

And as often as possible, seek to break away from how society told you friendships were supposed to be. Thrive as you embrace your kindred, sharing your heart, honouring their secrets and speaking well of their existence. Extend this to your lover/s and always make sure that what you explore with your favourites is worthy of legacy.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ October 2017

Dear Collective,

For this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective I am using The Collective Tarot by The Tarot Collective, partly because seeing the word ‘collective’ repeatedly amuses me, but mostly because it is a beautifully inclusive deck which soothes my tired, world-weary parts. Perhaps this deck can soothe your weary parts too.

This month’s questions are:

How do we dismantle the lies?

Who has our back?

How do we protect our minds and hearts from misguided bullshit?

How do we stay in connection with community?

Let us begin!

1. How do we dismantle the lies?

The Fool

The Fool - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

Dismantle the lies by being so honest and clear in your dealings with the world that those who rely on your believing their fabrications start to feel uncomfortable in your presence. Of course when I say honest, I don’t mean harsh (cue the petulant whine: “I was just being HONEST…), I mean being unashamedly clear about your observations (i.e, NOT your evaluations) so that those who persist in lying begin to unravel in your presence. I know the unravelling process can be painfully slow to watch sometimes, which is why I will pump lightness into your heart in between the heavy stuff, so that you are still able to connect with the important things despite any lingering treachery.

2. Who has our back?

Ace of Keys (Wands)

Version 2

I have your back and I have your heart. I have your memories and I will keep them safe. When I awaken within you, you will have no desire to behave in ways that dishonour the sacred stories people share with you in confidence. Unlock your own stories in my presence and be reassured that your revelations won’t be degraded by greed or manipulation.

For those strange, crazy, and hopefully rare moments when your stories might be gossiped about in corrupt ways that leave you feeling unsettled, lean into the knowledge that not everyone is so easily fooled, and that there will always be those willing to gaze piercingly at what is real, and what is not.

3. How do we protect our minds and hearts from misguided bullshit?

Seven of Keys (Wands)

Version 2

Protect your mind and heart from misguided bullshit by surrounding yourself with those who uplift your heart and speak to your intelligence. There is no need to face adversaries alone, it is far better to ignore the inflammatory comments of those who have no desire to connect with your experiential wisdom. If you feel called to face adversaries, meet them only with your people, so that you can keep renewing your energy as you face disappointingly stuck ideas and stances.

There is much ignorance to counteract in these times, especially from those who are unwilling to see how much has come to them so easily from mere accident of birth. Gather where you know you can find support, so that you can be reminded of what is most important in the quiet moments when it just you, alone with your thoughts.

4. How do we stay in connection with community?

Seeker of Bones

Seeker of Bones - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

Seek out the bones and there is community! Find the right bone though, not the rotten bones of old. Stay in connection with community by ignoring unnecessary expectations and rush toward those who find your very particular weirdness rather delightful and exceptional. Seek out situations that help you talk things through. Hold the talking bone. Speak when you’re holding it, shut up when you’re not. Don’t discard the idea of community just because someone hogs the bone and doesn’t want to share. Let them snuffle around while you talk with the wise ones. Perhaps they will get wiser one day – perhaps not. In a community though, maybe it doesn’t matter too much.

In the meantime, community is a collection of many parts – it is not a hierarchy – and no one deserves more attention than others. Forget the ‘deserves’: “I deserve this, I deserve that” – poo! Who cares? It’s irrelevant! Focus on what is most important, relevant and full of raw energy, right now. Focus on what can be made beautiful and help us all heal. Don’t let the divisions destroy. Be bigger than that. Be more loving than that. Keep creating good stuff and don’t let the silly potato-heads get you down.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ November 2017

Dearest Collective,

For this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective, I am using the Slow Holler Tarot Deck by the Slow Holler Collective. An inclusive deck made by artists with ties to the Southern states of the USA and/or Queer identities – I enjoy the ways my eyes and heart relax when gazing upon its mysterious beauty.

The Questions for this month are:

How do we best face ignorance in ourselves and others?

What do we need to sharpen?

What do we need to soften?

What do we need to see more of in ourselves and others?

Let’s begin!

1. How do we best face ignorance in ourselves and others?

Ten of Stones

Ten of Stones - Slow Holler Tarot by the Slow Holler Collective

By giving ourselves space between our thoughts, we best face ignorance in ourselves and others. What we thought in the past can be vastly different to what we think now, and having space to expand and realise what’s going on around us can help.

We can potter around the home or any safe space where we can take the time to go about our day while thoughts drift in and out. When we notice thoughts that block our potential for growth we can pause and acknowledge that in a mindful way: trying to remain kind to ourselves but certainly not letting ourselves off the hook. The idea is to be grounded with these awarenesses.

When we notice ignorance in others, we have the opportunity to extend the same mindful kindness to them as we do to ourselves. Which of course, is really difficult, and at times seemingly impossible…. and if they are harming us with their words or actions, then what good is being mindful and kind?

Well, I guess we can start with what investment we have in them ‘getting it’ and go from there. Do we really need them to come out of this specific ignorance in order for us to be happy? Are we just wanting them to piss off and leave us alone, or do we genuinely want to see them grow? Are we able to hold our ground with grace, and be so aware of what we want to share that our clarifying presence will no doubt creep into the cracks of their being somewhere, no matter how subtly? And if the ignorance entrenches itself to the point of apparently no return, can we just retreat and surround ourselves with like-minded wonderful people and bask in each other’s company for a spell?

2. What do we need to sharpen?

Eight of Vessels

Version 2

Sharpen your wisdom, your spiritual tenacity, your ways of being that help strengthen your capacity to deal with the vastness – the mysteriousness of life – without the need for a belief system as a prop.

Sharpen what you are lowering to the ground,  what you are offering to your community. It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be beautiful, but it does need to be a true reflection of you.

Sharpen your tears. Let them fall with purpose, not just because you want to roll in the misery. Let your tears serve their purpose in the moment they arise, you cry for this moment, not another.

Sharpen the fear that letting go means losing others. If they need to go, let them go, but if they need to stay, let them do so naturally. Don’t let those fears suffocate them, or you.

3. What do we need to soften?

The Magician

Version 3

Soften that haughtiness, that inauthentic sympathy, that ego.

But also soften that idea that you are meant to be fast, resilient and in control all the time.

Soften enough to make sure your tough exterior doesn’t become a faux truth while you spiral out of control inside.

Soften to make sure that people can still reach your heart even while you kick around making a mess. Soften to make sure there is still something rich inside of you and that you can make amends where possible.

4. What do we need to see more of in ourselves and others?

Two of Branches

Version 4

In ourselves and in others, we need to see

vulnerability

the onset of decay

that we are all skeletons underneath this flesh

that something grows from the pain

that we have all been messed up by these systems of oppression and that all-too-common statement, “that’s just the ways things are”

that an apology is nothing if it’s just words alone

that something beautiful and unique grows if we are still enough to watch, and wonder.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ December 2017

Dear Collective,

This month I am using the Triumph of Life Tarot – a deck conceived and coordinated by Andrew McGregor of thehermitslamp.com, and created by 72 different artists. What makes this tarot deck extra special is that it is entirely volunteer-made, and 100% of the profits will go towards cancer research! At time of writing over $700 has been raised. The deck also passes my looks-good-feels-good-smells-good test with flying colours! If you want to buy the deck go here.

I’m doing things a little differently this month. Instead of coming up with the questions and then drawing cards for the responses, I randomly pulled a card to ask the question, and then randomly pulled another card to provide the response. This way we get to see more cards and I get to test drive a new way of doing things.

Let’s begin!

Question 1: 8 of Cups

8 of Cups - Triumph of Life - this image by Jennifer Badot, deck coordinated by Andrew McGregor

Artwork by Jennifer Badot

How can you show your love a little more obviously… how can you translate your feelings in such a way that people can find you in your isolation?

Answer: 7 of Discs

Version 2

Artwork by S. Johanna Hill

Show your love by working on projects that require care and attention to detail, that require you to consider the world around you and then respond with creative force. Translate your feelings with a healthy dose of patience and hope, knowing that it’s always worthwhile putting in the effort to reach out to your community, even when your own mind-state makes it hard to trust that.

Question 2: Ace of Wands

Version 5

Artwork by Aisling Dreamrange

How can you bring light into impossible situations… how can you challenge outdated ideologies in a way that purifies and heals, rather than destroys?

Answer: The Hermit

Version 3

Artwork by Linda Jones

All that you can do is feel the strength of your own heart and push that light out in gracious flows or timid stutters, as it comes, as it goes. The light gets stronger with your ability to look within and see what treasures lie beneath the murkiness. Even though it will seem as though progress is slow and ideologies are suffocating – at least there will be the tiniest bit more awareness than there was before with each of your efforts. Bit by bit, it all adds up, and by spending time with other seekers, that force is bound to grow.

Question 3: The Wheel

Version 4

Artwork by Lori Lytle & Matthew Brown

Which way do you need to turn to better understand what’s ahead…where is it safest to seek solace, when the challenging parts just keep on keeping on?

Answer: 10 of Cups

10 of Cups - Triumph of Life - this image by Katalin Patnaik, deck coordinated by Andrew McGregor

Artwork by Katalin Patnaik

Turn to what you know works every time, even when you are resistant to it. Turn to the practices that ask you to pay attention to what you are feeling, rather than suppressing things. The safer spaces will be with the wise words of all those who have touched you – those living as well as dead – for now those words live inside of you and can guide you through chaos as it arises and falls away.

Question 4: The Tower

Version 3

Artwork by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

What do you need to break, in order to discover what’s within… what do you do when you can’t find anything within just yet, and it all feels empty and dry?

Answer: King of Wands

Version 2

Artwork by Ryan Edward

Break the ideas that bind you to the past and break the illusion that you need to be stronger for the task. When there is nothing to be found within right now, embrace stoicism with resigned curiosity until there is relief from the pressure, with the understanding that we cannot wait for others to change their behaviour in order for us to have release in our own mind state.

And, because when I contacted Andrew to ask for permission to use this deck for a Collective reading, I also asked if he was okay if I published more than the usual four cards on my blog, to which he responded, ‘use as many cards as you want’…here is a wild card:

7 of Swords

7 of Swords - Triumph of Life - this image by Sally E. Garrison, deck coordinated by Andrew McGregor.jpg

Artwork by Sally E. Garrison

Hold for the right moment. Notice where the trapdoors lie. Speak from a place that is unsettling for everyone, including yourself, but only for this moment. When the moment passes, you can relax again, knowing that you can trust yourself to speak your awareness when necessary.
